Liverpool, UK — Premier League giants Liverpool FC are making early moves in the summer transfer window, with reports indicating that Jeremie Frimpong, Bayer Leverkusen’s right-back, is their primary target for the first signing of the season.
Newly appointed head coach Arne Slot is said to be eyeing a reinforcement at right-back following news that Trent Alexander-Arnold plans to depart the club at the end of his contract this summer.
The 24-year-old Dutch international Frimpong has long been on Liverpool’s radar, and sources suggest he is open to a move to the Premier League champions.
To secure his services, Liverpool would need to trigger the £30 million ($40 million) release clause in Frimpong’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen.
According to PA Media, negotiations between the club and Frimpong’s representatives are already underway.
In addition to Frimpong, Liverpool is reportedly interested in his Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz, though they may face stiff competition from Bayern Munich and Manchester City for the highly rated attacking midfielder.
However, Wirtz’s estimated price tag of £125 million could prove to be a major obstacle for Liverpool, particularly as the club has multiple transfer targets to consider this summer.
As the transfer window heats up, Liverpool appears poised for significant changes under their new manager, with Frimpong potentially becoming the first piece of the club’s summer rebuild.
